Description
What is death? What is it like when a friend or relative dies? Is there life after death?

These are just a few of the questions a group of students ranging in age from eleven to fourteen asked themselves while exploring the subject of death and dying under the direction of teacher Eric Rofes at the Fayerweather Street School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Mr. Rofes and a section of his class called The Unit felt strongly that children have a right to know about death, and that shielding children from death is neither helpful nor responsible. They believe that if this difficult issue is discussed in an open manner - in the home, in school, in society at large - people will overcome their fears about death and develop a greater appreciation for life.
