A legacy of caring encompasses The Crossnore School's first hundred years as a refuge for children from North Carolina's mountains, most of whom arrive today, as they did generations ago, with their futures in peril. Like most mountain stories, A Legacy of Caring includes the unexpected twists and turns , from the days of founder Dr. Mary Martin Sloop, M.D., to the present, and yet another woman, Dr. Phyllis Crain, Ed.D. who has turned the school into one of the finest residential educational institutions in the country. In spite of desperate times, some of them of its own making, The Crossnore School has survived as a unique place that remains true to its founder's dedication to provide for young people -- "from six years to six feet" -- and allow them to grow and learn, thrive and dream.
